Rebecca D. Des Marais - Artist Statement & Story

My work centers around what is left from the actions of nature and humans – whether it is what is peeled or sloughed off naturally or by intention; eroded or abused by continual use or age; or discarded or the residue after some intervention.

My story: My husband died in early November 2006 from bladder cancer. He was diagnosed in September, operated on in November 2005. His life between diagnosis and death was a constant battle with infections, chemotherapy, emergencies, and procedures. He had always been a hearty, robust, healthy person; the cancer was sudden and fatal. He is sorely missed. He was a great help mate to me and my art work and built all the frames and stretched the canvas for these works – and provided the transportation for them. He was my greatest advocate and supporter – and asset!
